Bayou Sara is the remnant of a once flourishing town on the Mississippi, some few miles above Baton Rouge. It was burned by Admiral Porter during the war. After that affair, although Bayou Sara was too good a business point to be abandoned, yet the great majority of the inhabitants removed their homes to St. Francisville, a village on the heights about one mile east of the river.
